Chapter 21

Glenwise

When the siren blared through the castle, I jumped so hard that I knocked into my desk and sent a few odds and ends tumbling to the floor. That siren hadn’t been sounded since the night Alexander had died.

Instant fear gripped me, and my dragon surged up inside me, pressing against my skin. It wanted to get out, to protect us and our mate and our clan. The mere sound of that alarm had us ready to fight.

However, I resisted the press of my dragon. I stood and took a breath, filling my lungs carefully and releasing it slowly. I needed to be calm. I needed to think.

I had no idea what the emergency was but, whatever it was, it wasn’t good. Someone might be hurt and they’d need me to be a doctor, not a dragon.

It took a few seconds but, when I felt I had myself under control, I left the medical room and walked down the stairs. I made sure that I was walking, looking calm, because if I ran my dragon would take over and I wasn’t sure what it would do. The particular tone of that alarm was making it shiver inside me, making my skin crawl with the need to shift.

By the time I got downstairs, a lot of the clan were already there. We were streaming towards the grand hall, which was where we held our diplomatic meetings with other clans, and in days gone by we’d held balls and lavish events. It was huge, the high ceiling arching overhead and the marble floor polished to a shine. There were scratches in it that even the greatest craftspeople hadn’t been able to conceal – the fury that Lord Somerville had gouged into it in temper.

Today, though, we went there instinctively because it was the biggest space and it was the place where the greatest number of us could shift and move freely, if we were under attack. There was no point being able to shift into a dragon if we were fighting in a small room without enough space to spread our wings.

My eyes scanned the room, searching automatically. There was my father, standing with Great Aunt Evangeline and allowing her to rest her hand on his arm. Alfie was there, looking pale and scared. He’d never heard that siren before and it must have been doing the same uncomfortable things to him that it was to me, only perhaps for him it was worse because he’d never shifted before. If his dragon was making an appearance, it would be unfamiliar.

His mother, Lady Somerville, was right beside him, her eyes sharp like steel. She was restraining her dragon. She and her sister, Silvia, were either side of Alfie with their bodies turned slightly, shielding him. Silvia was scanning the room the same way I was.

Rhod wasn’t there.

I pushed my way over, inhaling deeply as I went, trying to scent anything unusual on the air, any blood. There was none.

“Where is he?” I asked Silvia.
